All my programs used on XP also run well on 7.
Possible problems with some old device drivers, especially on 64-bit. But most drivers for these devices were installed through Windows Update.
On 64-bit don't run 16-bit programs.
More background/scheduled processes than on XP, but less than on Vista.
Windows uses >10 GB of disk space, and about 500 MB of memory.
But personally I don't see a big difference between XP and 7, except that 7 looks better.
